From Ndutu’s grassy plains, where predators lurk and mothers fiercely protect their young, to the grandeur of the Ngorongoro Crater, and the quiet wildlife havens of Tarangire and Lake Manyara, this safari offers unmatched wildlife encounters. Expect to see lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards drawn by the abundance of easy prey—alongside elephants, giraffes, and flamingos.

Itinerary

This 8-day safari takes you on a spectacular journey through northern Tanzania’s premier wildlife sanctuaries during the dramatic calving season. From the baobab-studded landscapes of Tarangire to the predator-filled plains of Ndutu, and the legendary Serengeti to the majestic Ngorongoro Crater, this itinerary is specially crafted to give you a front-row seat to one of nature’s most breathtaking events—the great wildebeest calving.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by your driver, who will escort you to your accommodation in Arusha at Charity Hotel or a similar establishment, where you will spend your first night. This gives you time to rest after your journey and prepare for the exciting days ahead.

The adventure begins with Tarangire National Park, known for its massive herds of elephants and iconic baobab trees. Established in 1970, this park features diverse landscapes ranging from swamps and river valleys to acacia woodlands. During the dry season, the Tarangire River serves as a lifeline for wildlife, attracting large numbers of wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, and gazelles, making it a prime hunting ground for predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Bird enthusiasts will find over 500 species, including the colorful lilac-breasted roller. After a thrilling game drive, you will head to Martina Retreat in Karatu for a relaxing evening and overnight stay.

: The next destination is Serengeti National Park, the most celebrated wildlife reserve in Africa, declared a national park in 1951. The name “Serengeti” comes from the Maasai word meaning “endless plains,” perfectly describing its vast expanse. En route, you can visit a Maasai village for an immersive cultural experience or explore Olduvai Gorge, a renowned archaeological site that has provided critical insights into human evolution. The Serengeti is home to an unparalleled variety of wildlife, including the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—alongside cheetahs, hyenas, and countless herbivores. As the wildebeest calving season takes place in the southern Serengeti, predators are highly active, creating dramatic scenes of survival. You will stay overnight at Serenity Luxury Camp, where you can relax under the starry African sky.

Spending another day in the Eastern Serengeti, you will witness the raw beauty of the Great Migration, where over a million wildebeest give birth, attracting numerous predators like lions, hyenas, and cheetahs. The landscape here varies from vast grass plains to rocky kopjes that provide excellent vantage points for big cats. This region also hosts bat-eared foxes, jackals, giraffes, and different species of antelope. Another overnight stay at Serenity Luxury Camp ensures you are well-rested for the next day's adventure.

Leaving the Serengeti, you will head toward Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that serves as a sanctuary for diverse wildlife. The conservation area, established in 1959, includes the famed Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive volcanic caldera. The crater floor is teeming with life, including endangered black rhinos, hippos, wildebeest, zebras, and more than 500 bird species. The alkaline Lake Magadi attracts thousands of flamingos, creating a spectacular sight. After a full day of exploration, you will check into Kontiki Tented Lodge for a peaceful night surrounded by nature.

You will explore the Ndutu region, known for its lush grazing grounds that attract the wildebeest herds during calving season. The mix of acacia woodlands, swamps, and open plains provides a haven for both prey and predators. Watching newborn wildebeests take their first steps while cheetahs and lions lurk in the background creates a thrilling experience. You will return to Martina Retreat in Karatu for a well-deserved rest.

On the final safari day, you will descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. The crater is home to a high concentration of wildlife, including large lion prides, elusive leopards, and roaming elephants. You will have one last chance to spot the rare black rhino before heading back to Arusha or Moshi for your overnight stay at Martina Retreat or a similar lodge.

The safari concludes with a transfer to Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport, where you can catch your flight home or extend your adventure with additional activities. If you have an evening departure, consider a cultural tour, a visit to a coffee plantation, or a relaxing day in Arusha. This itinerary provides an unforgettable experience, offering the best of Tanzania’s wildlife, landscapes, and culture during the breathtaking wildebeest calving season.
