8 Days Northern Circuit Safari in Tanzania – Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Upon arrival in Tanzania, guests are welcomed and transferred to Raha Wildlife Lodge in Arusha, where they can relax and enjoy dinner before the adventure begins. Arusha, known as the gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, sits at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters and enjoys a mild climate with temperatures averaging between 13°C and 28°C. This city, surrounded by lush green coffee plantations and the towering Mount Meru, provides a tranquil start to the safari.

The journey begins with a visit to Tarangire National Park, famous for its towering baobab trees and vast elephant herds. This park, covering 2,850 square kilometers, is a haven for diverse wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and the endangered African wild dog. The Tarangire River, the park’s lifeline, attracts numerous animals during the dry season. Lunch is served at a scenic picnic site, and after an afternoon game drive, guests head to Karatu for an overnight stay at Martina Retreat or Farm of Dreams, both offering a cozy atmosphere with excellent service. Karatu, located near the Ngorongoro highlands, experiences cooler temperatures, typically ranging between 10°C and 25°C.

The adventure continues towards Serengeti National Park, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The drive from Karatu to Ikoma takes travelers through the Central Serengeti, where golden grasslands and rocky outcrops (kopjes) serve as prime habitats for lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Kogatende is also home to resident lions, leopards, and elephants that roam the open plains. Guests enjoy lunch at a scenic picnic site and continue exploring before settling into their accommodation at either Serengeti Heritage or Serenity Camp, both offering a blend of comfort and immersion in the wild.

A second day in Kogatende allows for further exploration of this migration hotspot. Early morning and late afternoon game drives increase the chances of witnessing a thrilling river crossing. Other species commonly seen in this region include elands, topis, and buffaloes, while the dense woodlands provide a habitat for elusive leopards. The Mara River itself, with its rich birdlife, adds to the remarkable ecosystem of the area. After another fulfilling day, guests return to their lodge for an evening of relaxation and storytelling around the campfire.

Heading east, the safari takes guests to the Eastern Serengeti, a lesser-visited but wildlife-rich area known for its cheetah population. The rolling grasslands of this region create an ideal hunting ground for these fast predators, often seen chasing gazelles at incredible speeds. Other animals frequently spotted include giraffes, hartebeests, and warthogs, while the presence of ostriches and secretary birds adds to the diversity of this unique landscape. With its open plains and minimal tourist traffic, the Eastern Serengeti provides an intimate and raw safari experience before guests return to their lodge for the night.

The journey continues to Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife destinations. This massive volcanic caldera, measuring about 20 kilometers in diameter, harbors an incredible density of wildlife, including the highly sought-after black rhinoceros. The crater’s floor is a mix of open grasslands, swamps, and acacia woodlands, creating ideal conditions for spotting lions, elephants, hippos, and large herds of wildebeests and zebras. Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake within the crater, attracts flamingos, pelicans, and other waterbirds. The cool, high-altitude climate of Ngorongoro, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 20°C, offers a refreshing contrast to the warm plains of the Serengeti. After a full day of game viewing, guests return to Karatu for dinner and overnight accommodation at Martina Retreat or Farm of Dreams.

On the final day, guests enjoy a leisurely breakfast before departing for Arusha. The drive passes through scenic landscapes, coffee plantations, and Maasai villages, providing a final glimpse into Tanzania’s rich culture. Depending on flight schedules, there may be time for a brief exploration of Arusha before heading to the airport for departure, concluding an unforgettable eight-day safari across Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife destinations.
